春燕（チュン・ヤン）と私が出会ったのは，ＡＦＦ(Asia Friend Finder)の「庭園」という名前のチャットルームだった．私はその日，やや落ち込んでいたので, lurker (ROM)でいるつもりだったが，彼女の方から私に話しかけてきた．彼女がその部屋でどのように振舞っていたか，よく覚えている．彼女は積極的に誰にでも，男女の別なく話しかけていた（まるでその家の主人が新来の客に誰彼なく挨拶するように．しかし我物顔にというのではなかった）．とてもオープンマインドな女のこ，というのが私の第一印象だ．私たちはメールアドレスを交換し，文通が始まった．彼女は昼間は日本語学校に通い，夜間制の大学で，コンピュータサイエンスを学んでいた．
彼女は中国のある大都市のラジオ局でタイピストのアルバイトをしていた．彼女はそこで働いている時間の中のほんのわずかのブレークタイムに，その職場で１台だけインターネットに繋がっている機械を使ってウェブにアクセスすることができた．期末試験を控え，彼女は一時アルバイトを止めることを決断した（彼女は少し疲れていた）．――およそ２ヶ月間．「１２月にはきっとメールする」と彼女は私に約束した．私はその後も，開かれることのないメールボックスに毎日メールを送り続けたが，何時かそれも止まった．．． (M.N. 99/12/20)
